Cape Cod
A haven for presidents and celebrities alike,
Cape Cod is surrounded by bayside and oceanside
beaches, and percolated by kettle ponds and
estuaries. Scattered throughout the sand dunes,
lighthouses add to the charm of the peninsula.
Bicycle along Shining Sea Bikeway, past
cranberry bogs and working windmills, or spend
the day whale watching out of Barnstable Harbor.
Peruse local art galleries and explore Cape Cod’s
rich history with a visit to Pilgrim Monument and
Provincetown Museum, which commemorates
the first landing of the pilgrims in 1620 and the
signing of the Mayflower Compact.
Two of New England’s premier islands are
accessible with a short ferry ride from Cape Cod:
Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Bikes are allowed,
so bring one aboard and sightsee while cycling.
Newport
Home to the oldest lending library, synagogue
and continuous Fourth of July celebration in the
country, Newport proudly celebrates its history. It’s
seen in the coastal forts and the navy base, where
the decommissioned USS Saratoga is clearly visible
from the Newport Bridge. And it lives on through
architecture, with its large number of surviving
colonial buildings.
Newport’s architectural history is preserved in its
famed mansions. These 11 historic properties allow
visitors to explore 250 years of American history.
The Hunter House, for one, is one of the finest
examples of Georgian Colonial architecture that
the city is still known for.
As much a socialite vacation spot as Cape Cod, it
stands to reason yachting would be a preferred
pastime. Sail aboard America’s Cup yachts, playing
as big or small a role in piloting the vessel as
desired, or kayak around Easton Bay for a sweeping
view of popular Easton Beach.
Boston
As the scene of several key events in the
American Revolution, including the Boston Tea
Party, it might seem impossible to hit every
Historic Treasures: Boston, Newport & Cape Cod
historically relevant site in one visit. But the
Freedom Trail is a good place to start, with 16
historic attractions lining a 2.5-mile walking trail
through downtown, Beacon Hill and the North
End. Boston Common, the first stop, served as
the backdrop for speakers such as Martin Luther
King Jr. and Pope John Paul II.
Step off the red brick path for a respite at the
Union Oyster House, the oldest restaurant in Boston,
or duck into the Sam Adams Brewery for a pint.
The largest city in New England is replete with a
bustling open-air market full of vendors and street
performers. No longer a place where Bostonians
buy groceries, this 27,000-square-foot marketplace
has morphed into a veritable smorgasbord of
restaurants, food stands and shops.
