From sea to shining sea, America sparkles with
more than enough history-laden monuments,
head-spinning thrill rides and awe-inspiring natural
wonders to make your next family vacation a
memorable one.
Fun in the Caribbean
More than two dozen island nations make up the
Caribbean Islands, each with a distinct culture and
vibe. With fabulous sun-drenched beaches, exciting
activities such as zip-lining and water sports, as well as
duty-free shopping, any one of these islands offer
plenty for families.
All-inclusive resorts are great choices for travelers
looking for convenience – one price includes all
meals, drinks, tips and entertainment. All-inclusives
offer a wide range of activities for the entire family
including things like on-site aqua parks, mini-golf,
movie theaters, rock climbing walls, non-motorized
water sports, lazy rivers, kids’ day programs, and much
more. Nightly entertainment may include movies on
the beach, live music, and professionally executed
stage shows. Most offer many restaurant options from
casual to gourmet.
A Caribbean cruise is also a wonderful vacation
option for families because it offers something for
everyone, with onboard entertainment and shore
excursions suitable for all ages. While the kids take
part in planned activities designed specially for them,
adults are free to indulge in spa treatments, a
workout, or perhaps gambling in the casino. Some
cruise lines even offer special shore excursions for
the kids.
TheWild Southwest
Combine the great outdoors with the hustle
and bustle of one of America’s fastest-growing
cities – Las Vegas – to create a family vacation
unlike any other.
Start at the 1,904-square-mile Grand Canyon, with
its majestic, multihued cliffs and clefts. The Colorado
River cuts right through the canyon. For the daring,
there is whitewater rafting or a vertigo-inspiring
glass-bottomed walkway that extends 70 feet out
into the canyon.
Then, venture by car (about five hours) or plane
(about an hour and a half) to Las Vegas. On the way,
stop by Hoover Dam, just 30 miles outside the city.
The 6.6 million-ton structure offers a self-paced tour
that descends 500 feet into the wall of Black Canyon
to the power plant. Views of Lake Mead and the
Colorado River from the Overlook are nothing short
of breathtaking.
Like water for a thirsty traveler, Las Vegas rises from
the barren desert, an oasis of entertainment and fun
for the entire family. Take children to Circus Circus,
with its free circus acts every day on the half hour;
conquer the death-defying thrill rides more than
100 stories up at the
Stratosphere; and get
joyously lost in M&M’s
World.
Back to Our Roots
From the first patriots
landing at Plymouth Rock
through the American
Revolution and the Civil
War, the eastern section of
the United States has seen
it all – and then some.
History blankets Philadelphia, where visitors can
explore Independence National Historical Park.
The park features Independence Hall, where the
Declaration of Independence was adopted and the
U.S. Constitution was written, as well as the famed
Liberty Bell.
And then there’s Washington, D.C. Where better
for children to learn about the workings of
government than at the heart of it?
At the eastern tip of the National Mall – a two-mile
swath of green – the Capitol is a great jumping off
point for other D.C. sites. Smithsonian Institution
museums – all of which are free – line the mall,
including the National Museum of American History
and the National Air and Space Museum.
Also on the National Mall, rising 555.5 feet in the air,
is the strikingWashington Monument, which boasts
some of the best views inWashington, D.C. Continue
west to the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial,
which resembles a Greek temple and includes a
19-foot statue of the nation’s 16th president.
Day trips from D.C. might include Gettysburg
National Military Park – the site of the Gettysburg
Address – and Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia,
which illustrates life in the 18th century. Costumed
citizens show off colonial houses that lack electricity
and hot running water, and visitors can watch
demonstrations on how things like making butter
were done in the “old days.”
