As driver education classes
disappear frommore and more high
schools, more parents are finding
themselves to be the “designated
driving instructor” for their teen.
Teaching someone how to drive is
a huge responsibility and can be
overwhelming. Where and how does
one start?
Actually, parents have been showing
their child“how to drive”since the day
they started riding in a forward-facing
car seat. By the time they are 8 years old,
children have developed a basic belief
about driving fromobserving their
parents and other adults behind the
wheel. They’ve watched, and listened,
as rules were followed (or not) and as
attitudes toward other drivers where
displayed.
By the time they are 16, teens have
already adopted many driving habits
and are just waiting to put them into
practice.
Thus begins the most critical phase
of a young person’s life, as car crashes
remain the leading cause of death for
teens across the U.S.
How can parents prepare themselves
and their teen to safely navigate this life
phase? By learning the facts behind teen
crashes and taking action to protect their
teen, parents can help develop a safer
teen driver.
A recent list of the “Top 10 Things
Many Parents Don’t Know About Teen
Driving” compiled by the National
Safety Council included:
• The most dangerous time of a teen
driver’s life is the first 12 months after
receiving a license.
• A teen driver’s crash risk is three times
that of drivers ages 20 and older.
• More than half of teens killed in car
crashes were not wearing a seatbelt.
By knowing and strictly enforcing the
laws for teen drivers, parents may not win
a popularity contest but will be taking
the first step in protecting their teen.
