Nestled at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains,
Pigeon Forge promises bountiful outdoor splendor
and down home country cookin’. A town of only
6,000 draws tourists with visions of hiking and horse-
back riding in 500,000 acres of Southern Appalachian
wilderness. The Smokies offer winding valleys, bear
sightings and century-old architecture. The highest
point in the park – and Tennessee, for that matter – is
Clingmans Dome at 6,643 feet. On the summit sits
an observation tower, which offers expansive views
more than 100 miles out on clear days.
Pigeon Forge is home to Dolly Parton’s namesake
theme park, replete with coasters, waterslides, blue-
grass and gospel concerts, as well as a country fair. The
country queen’s amusement park features traditional
crafts andmusic of the Smoky Mountains. As the
largest employer in the community, Dollywood has a
dramatic impact on the economy of Pigeon Forge.
In keeping with the celebrity theme, the Hollywood
Wax Museumhas become an instant landmark that
provides visitors and locals a dose of celebrity with the
largest collection of wax figures. Stargazers can pose
with lifelike recreations of their favorite celebrities.
A town attraction of a more somber nature is the
world’s largest Titanic MuseumAttraction. Visitors
can experience what it would have been like to walk
the hallways and grand staircase, as well as attempt
to stand on a sloping deck. The museumboasts 400
artifacts directly from the ship and a memorial room
where all 2,208 names of those who died line the wall.
A trip to the Midwest is not complete without
sampling authentic slow-smoked barbecue and
homemade biscuits. Corky’s, Bennett’s or Smokin’
Eds each own an untarnished reputation for bona
fide Southern cuisine. The town also offers its
visitors boutique and outlet shopping. Pigeon River
Crossing has brand name factory outlet stores and
is the largest shopping destination in Pigeon Forge.
For something unique, hand-blown glass and
handmade pottery are specialty items that make
wonderful souvenirs and gifts.
What was once a small farming community is now
a thriving tourist destination that attracts more than
10 million visitors each year. Its hospitality, spoils
of nature and world-famous barbecue are to be
savored.
