I hope everyone had a great summer
enjoying family and friends. With
this in mind I’m reminded that while
technology changes the way we do
things, it’s not always for the better.
Many people use GPS units for road
trips; however, as many of us have
learned, they are great when you are in a pinch, but they
do not always provide the best way to get from point A
to point B.
This summer my family went to Williamsburg, Virginia
and the GPS unit was routing us down Interstate 95
through the Capital Beltway. After talking to our travel staff,
I was provided an alternate route that avoided the traffic
congestion of the Washington, D.C. area.
On another road trip to southern New Jersey the GPS
unit routed us down Interstate 76 through Philadelphia.
Again, after talking with the AAA travel staff, they provided
me with an alternate route, which took us over the
Commodore John Barry Bridge, thus avoiding the traffic
congestion of Philadelphia.
While I know many of you rely heavily on your GPS
units or online directions, I encourage you to visit our
travel staff before making your next road trip to see if
there are alternate routes that will save you time, in
addition to educating you of possible road construction
along your planned route. Keep in mind that trip routing
services – TripTiks – are included in your AAA membership,
along with complimentary state and local maps and
TourBooks. Another great tool to compliment the TripTik is
AAA's mobile app; just shake it and you can see how much
longer your journey will be. It's a nice way to combine
technology with AAA's personal expertise.
