Culturally and geographically diverse South
America presents the visitor with an amazing array
of experiences.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is blessed with stunning
scenery, magnificent architecture and exquisite
cuisine. Soak up the cultural flavor of the city by
walking along a crescent of coastline that stretches
along mountains and sea. In the harbor lies Sugar
Loaf Mountain, guarding the entrance to the Bay of
Guanabara. Nearby, atop Corcovado Mountain,
stands the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer,
presiding over the beautiful city.
With sunny skies most days of the year and miles
of golden sand beaches at their doorstop, the
people of Rio make the beach a favorite
playground, enjoying the surf, paddle tennis and
volleyball. Stroll along the mosaic sidewalks of the
beachfront neighborhoods of famous Copacabana,
Ipanema and Leblon. At day’s end on Arpoador
Beach, many beachgoers linger at the promenade
to glimpse the last streaks of color on the horizon.
Venture inland to the border of Brazil and
Argentina for a waterfall display that almost makes
the Niagara Falls look tame in comparison. In 2011,
Iguazu Falls was named one of the New Seven
Wonders of Nature, with its layers of cascading
water divided by islands. Four times the width of
Niagara, the falls spread over nearly 2 miles of the
Iguazu River. The best seasons to visit this wonder
of nature are spring and fall, as summer is humid
and in winter the water level is lower.
In the Peruvian Andes, Machu Picchu, the “Lost
City of the Incas” represents one of the most
important archaeological and architectural sites in
South America. Plan to spend a full day exploring
the mysteries of this ancient site, which stands at
an altitude of 8,875 feet amid a tropical mountain
forest. Fog often encircles the 15th-century Incan
ruins, giving it an air of majesty. It is possible to
hike the Inca Trail, but for most travelers the best
option for reaching Machu Picchu is taking the

three-and-a-half-hour train ride to the top of the
Andes. As an added feature, visitors can opt to stay
overnight at a hotel and rise early to see the
Andean sunset.
