Few places on earth are as wild and woolly, yet strikingly
beautiful, as Alaska. By land or sea, a journey through
the U.S.A.’s 49th state is an adventure of unparalleled
proportion.
Along the Inside Passage, a 1,000-mile stretch of waterway,
cruise passengers marvel at majestic glaciers, calving into
deep, steely blue-hued waters where whales, porpoises
and sea otters frolic. Bears, deer and other wild animals can
be seen roaming along the densely forested shoreline, as
bald eagles soar above. And with each turn of the bend yet
another incredible view of mountains, sea and sky unfolds.
Each community in Southeast Alaska clings to its cultural
heritage. In Ketchikan, ancestral home of the Tongas tribe
of Tlingit, travelers find the world’s largest collection of
totem poles. Museums and cultural centers provide native
dancing, carving and artifact exhibits. Sitka unearths its
Russian and Tlingit cultural roots at Sitka National Historical
Park and at St. Michael’s Cathedral, which houses priceless
icons. Skagway displays its colorful history at the Klondike
Gold Rush National Historical Park, where wooden
boardwalks and false-fronted buildings still stand. Juneau,
accessible only by sea, is easily recognized as a product of
the 1800 Gold Rush. Mendenhall Glacier is Juneau’s most
popular attraction. At approximately a half-mile wide, with
ice 300 to 1,800 feet deep, this glacier is truly awe-inspiring.
The best Alaska vacations combine a cruise with a land
tour. Cruisetours are a great way to get a glimpse of life in
Alaska’s major population settlements – Anchorage and
Fairbanks – as well as to see magnificent Denali National
Park & Preserve, located in the state’s interior.
Touring includes a luxury railcar journey to Denali, home to
Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, as well
as overnight stays in luxury accommodations at the park.
Denali is one of the best places on earth to view animals in
their natural habitat. Travelers are certain to
catch sight of foraging caribou, Dall sheep,
foxes, moose, wolves and brown bears.
During the months of May through
September, Holland America Line and
Princess Cruises, as well as other leading
cruise lines, make weekly cruisetour
departures in Alaska. In 2014, Holland
America Line will enhance its program with
its new Land+Sea Journeys, which will offer
guests more opportunities than ever to
explore and personalize their Great Land
vacations.
Land+Sea Journeys will offer the benefit of
combining the “must-see” of Denali National
Park with the “seldom seen”wonders of the
Yukon, including one- or two-night stays in
the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush Country.
Each Land+Sea Journey will go off the
beaten path and showcase places such as
Dawson City in the heart of gold rush
country, the five-star Alyeska Resort, pristine
Kluane and Tombstone parks, colorful
Skagway, and the historic narrow-gauge
White Pass and Yukon route railroad.
