Visiting Prague is an experience of a lifetime; a
magical city of bridges, cathedrals and walled
courtyards. I was so excited to be in Prague
because of my heritage and it's been high on my
bucket list. I was able to experience why everyone
falls in love with this city.
As I walked down the narrow cobblestone
streets in Old Town, I was amazed by the beautiful
architecture and small alleyways leading past the
marketplace and shops into the Old Town Square,
dominated by the neo-Gothic Church of Our Lady of
Tyn and Town Hall dating back to 1091. Just one
block off the main square, you can visit Charles
University, the garnet stone factory and the crystal
shops. Be sure to sample the many food options
from the street vendors in the center square –
haluski made in a huge iron skillet, roasted pig,
perogies made with gouda cheese, hot wine and
cinnamon rolls roasted on an open fire. You can also
enjoy a carriage ride to the famous St. Charles
Bridge, which was commissioned in 1357 by Czech
King and Roman Emperor Charles IV.
If you have time, be sure to visit the historical
Jewish Quarters, Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral and
the Presidential Palace. For fun and relaxation, I would
suggest a folklore dinner show and dining at the
Hotel U Prince, located directly in the heart of Prague
on the venerable Old Town Square. The view from this
hotel is breathtaking, with castles in the distance and
views of the Town Hall Clock and vendors below.
En route to Vienna, we stopped at a small village
called Cesky Krumlov, a must see if you are in the
area. The historical center in Vienna has
beautiful architecture, including Baroque
castles and gardens. I recommend a visit to the
Hofburg Imperial Residence & Palace of the
Arts, which was once the center of the gigantic
Habsburg Empire. Plan to spend a good part of
the day on the grounds, as there are numerous
museums and restaurants. This palace also
includes the Spanish Riding School and the
Imperial Court Chapel where the Vienna Boys’
Choir perform every Sunday morning. (Tickets
for the Gala riding performance and the choir
must be ordered in advance.)
Before 1873, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, was
actually two towns – Buda and Pest – divided by the
Danube River. On the Buda hillside you can visit
St Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in Budapest,
and the magnificent Parliament Building, which
overlooks the Danube River on the Pest side.
Budapest has over 14 thermal baths; most can be
found in the hilly parts of the city, such as the Castle
Hill area or Gellert Hill, but there are also baths on the
Pest side as well.
If you decide to visit Eastern Europe in November
or December, you can also enjoy the wonderful
Christmas markets for holiday shopping. AAA
Northampton can help you choose the perfect
escorted tour or riverboat cruise, so call us today.
