Clean, brisk air. Billowy clouds that linger over
mesmerizing seascapes and picturesque towns.
Quiet country roads littered with brilliantly colored
fallen leaves — vibrant shades of reds, yellows,
oranges. This is the North Atlantic Coast in autumn.
In Vermont, the glorious colors of fall foliage
enhance the beauty of rolling green hills
punctuated by charming houses and country inns
cluttered around steepled churches and town halls.
Visitors to Maine can witness spectacular fall
colors at Acadia National Park, where mountains,
forests, lakes and the Atlantic Ocean form the
perfect backdrop. Traveling south, a stopover in
Kennebunkport, one of New England’s most
famous seaside resorts, is a must.
Autumn in New Hampshire is a tribute to nature
with its crimson mountain tops, crystal lakes and
trees illuminated with ochre hues. A popular point
of interest is Franconia Notch State Park, in the
heart of the White Mountain National Forest.
Venturing northward into Canada, travelers find
that the entire St. Lawrence Valley is ablaze with
colors at this time of year.
Several cruise lines offer sailings from New York
to the Canadian Maritimes and through the Saint
Lawrence Seaway in the fall. Points of interest
include Bar Harbor, Maine: St. John, New Brunswick;
Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the French Canadian cities
of Montreal and Quebec City, Quebec.
In Montreal, a city as cosmopolitan as New
York and as French as Paris, take a city tour or a
flight-seeing journey over the Laurentian
Autumn on the North Atlantic Coast
Mountains. In old Montreal, cobblestone streets
lead the way to town squares and 17th and 18th
century churches. The town’s old stone buildings
have been renovated since the early 1960s into a
variety of more contemporary edifices such as
restaurants and shops, clubs, galleries and private
residences.
Quebec City in autumn is one of North America’s
most intriguing cities. In the old section you can
see buildings two centuries old that are now in use
as restaurants, apartments and stores. A visit to
Old Quebec, with its narrow cobblestone streets,
is like going back to the 17th century.
With so much history to uncover and such
startlingly beautiful scenery, a journey along the
Eastern Seaboard in autumn is enviable.
